Find out how our surface finishes protect your home and family from some of its most common enemies – mold, mildew, and dust.
Recent studies have suggested that indoor exposures -- to dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pet dander, tobacco smoke, and other biological and chemical pollutants -- may influence the disease courses such as asthmatic allergies and other sick-building symptoms caused by moisture in the walls.
What are the health effects of mold?
- Some people are allergic to molds.
- Mold exposure may cause or worsen asthma symptoms, hay fever, or other allergies.
- The most common symptoms of mold exposure are cough, congestion, runny nose, and trouble breathing. Symptoms usually disappear after the mold contamination is removed.
Naturally high in pH, lime finishes act as an anti-bacterial surface, neutralizing the development of organic substances such as mold and fungus.

What Are Molds?
Molds are microscopic fungi that live on plant and animal matter. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they grow on virtually any substance when moisture is present.
Molds produce tiny spores to reproduce, just as plants produce seeds. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Some molds can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods and even dynamite.
There is no practical way to eliminate all molds indoors; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture. If you think you have a mold problem and can see mold growth, you do not need environmental testing to determine what kind of mold you have. Instead, simply clean the mold from the surface it's growing on and dry the surface thoroughly.
Some pollutants in the air are especially harmful for children, elderly people, and those with health problems. Most of us spend much of our time indoors. The air that we breathe in our homes, in schools, and in offices can put us at risk for health problems. Some pollutants can be chemicals, gases, and living organisms like mold and pests.
We work primarily within the hospitality, commercial, and residential sectors. Johanna's Design Studio continually invents new approaches, and reinterprets fine art materials – combined with natural pigments, aggregates, and plasters.
